Marina Hand-Painted Fayoum Pottery Platter

The Marina Hand-Painted Fayoum Pottery Platter is inspired by the wonderfully expressive portraits found in ancient Coptic textiles, where faces with wide eyes, distinctive hairstyles and beautiful jewellery appear with an immediacy that still feels fresh today. Part of our first exploration into figurative pottery, Marina was designed in-house and brought to life in Fayoum by Sarah, the talented potter and painter behind each piece. Her confident, instinctive brushstrokes are central to the design: a few beautifully judged lines create Marina’s wide eyes, softly curling hair, rosy cheeks and bright red earrings. Every Marina is painted individually by Sarah. Small variations in the line, expression and brushwork mean that no two are identical, while the strength of Sarah’s painterly hand ensures that each is beautifully resolved in its own right. Generously sized, Marina can sit as a centrepiece on a coffee table or console, or be hung on the wall as a piece of ceramic art. Display her alone, alongside Damiana, or as part of a collection of Fayoum pottery. A meeting of ancient Coptic portraiture and contemporary Egyptian craft, Marina is as much a portrait as she is a platter — joyful, individual and full of character.
